For this discussion you will need to 1. listen to the following radio broadcast (Think broadcast) that addresses many of the issues of contact and conquest we are discussing and address the related questions. 2. Read the various local news coverage of the Alamo and the burial grounds and address the related questions. 3. My overall goal is for you to reflect on how the past has shaped our understanding of our current time and to reflect on your own viewpoint of how you view the history of contact and conquest in the Americas of New World. It is important to reflect on the narrative and how this even affects your viewpoint; words such as New World, The Americas, Natives, Indians, Colonizers, Conquistadors, murders, infectious disease, conquest, contact, all affect how we interpret the history and how we view what happened as well as how we view the issues in our time. What is you overall reaction to this piece? Do you agree with what was said by Marie Arana? 2. What is the piece directly relates to what we read about in Gorn 1 and/or Hollitz 1? What is the piece was new information that you did not know before? 3. After listening to this piece, how has your understanding of contact and conquest changed? Has your view changed in any way or has it become more supported by what was said in the broadcast? 4. What was the one part of the broadcast that caught your attention or stood out to you most? It could be a new fact, thought or opinion that you learned from the broadcast. One thing that stood out to me was when Marie Arana reflected on what Montezuma thought of Cortes and that he viewed Cortes and his men as smelling oddly or I think she said barbaric and that he was so suprised that Cortes wanted to rule becaus Montezuma just saw him as a wanderer and not really a threat to his power as Montezuma was so powerful himself. Also, the idea Marie mentions that it was not just the Spanish who conqured Montezuma and the Aztecs on their own (as with other groups she discusses such as the Incas), it was their ability to get the other native groups/tribes who were enemies of the Aztecs to fight on their side and this is why they succeeded. *These are just a few of the concepts Marie Arana shares that stood out to me and you can include any idea or fact or opinion that stands out to you.
